A Gift to Be Simple

A Gift to Be Simple
A Gift to Be Simple
The other day, I worked from Psalm 131 where the writer talks about not involving himself in things that are too difficult for him, and today's painting has a similar theme. My Bible reading this morning was in 1 Corinthians and these verses seemed to be my focus.

1 Corinthians 2:1-3
When I came to you, brothers, announcing the testimony of God to you, I did not come with brilliance of speech or wisdom. For I didn’t think it was a good idea to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. I came to you in weakness, in fear, and in much trembling.

I don't know for sure whether the link is clear, but somehow it spoke to me of my own weaknesses, especially as I share my work with so many people (many of whom I have never met!) I wanted to paint something that shows simplicity, but maybe still communicates joy.

In spite of the fact that I spend a lot of time studying, practicing, and learning my craft, I often still feel the "weakness... fear... trembling" that Paul mentions in the verses above. I don't necessarily think that is a bad thing, though! I wouldn't call it comfortable at all, but it is a good stimulus to keep me working diligently. (Even when the work is a pleasure, it is still pressing forward to become more skillful.)

Another verse that came to my attention this morning is this one, and I found it particularly encouraging:
1 Corinthians 1:25 because God’s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God’s weakness is stronger than human strength.
What a relief that I don't have to be wise and strong! I can rest in knowing that God is wise and strong, and all I need to do is follow His calling. It reminds me of the Shaker song called Simple Gifts, where some of the lyrics are

" 'Tis a gift to be simple
'Tis a gift to be free
'Tis a gift to come down where we ought to be"
