Between-the-Lakes en plein air

Between-the-Lakes en plein air
What a weekend! I participated in a three day paint-out event with the Northern Indiana Plein Air Association, and it was enjoyable - and it helps that one of my paintings sold before I even got to post about it. The first day of painting, I went to a park where I found a pavilion to work in. It was great, because I had shade and a light breeze throughout the time I worked, as well as a picnic table where I could spread out my tools. I don't have to have that extra space, but it is sure convenient sometimes. This park area looks out over a marshy access between two lakes, which I enjoyed painting.

The second day, I painted something completely different - an industrial site. And what fun that was! As you can tell, the first day was sunny and bright, and the second was overcast, so I chose to paint where the shadows would be less important to the finished painting. Obviously, I painted with "colors bumped up to eleven", as I have heard it said. To me, the thing that really made this painting work was the Amish buggy that was parked there.

It was a big paint out event, and there were a lot of serious painters. Almost every other painter was painting something almost photographic, and of course, I was not. As I discovered partway through the weekend, this was not a hobby event - it was a show off event! People were very serious about their work, and they brought some of their best paintings to sell. We had a large sale at the end of the event, with about 20 artists set up almost like an art fair, and there were also quite a few people who wanted to buy art!

My work already stood out, to some extent, because of my color and style choices, but I decided that if it was a show off event, then I would also show my abstract work! I think I had the highest level of interaction at my display of any other artist - at least, that is how it seemed to me. It was great to be able to share what I love at a good show. AND, of course, it was great to sell my Old Molasses Factory painting.
