Morning Light en plein air

Morning Light en plein air
Morning Light en plein air was by far my favorite painting from this most recent plein air adventure, and it was also the most fun to paint. And, of course, it didn't hurt any that it won a merit award at the event!

14" x 11"
Painted with the finest quality heavy-body acrylic paint on canvas panel
Simple natural wood frame
Painting is currently available through a gallery - contact me if you are interested in purchasing.

Painted on the second day of the paint out, it was inspired by gorgeous color in the wooded bike trail area, with the sun backlighting a good part of the view. A stone and concrete edged stream passed in front of me, and I had a little area of flat ground to stand on as I painted.

I was so grateful that my Beloved Husband came with me for the entire weekend of painting this time! Even though he is always willing to be my "artist support staff", I usually encourage him to do other things on the weekends when plein air events take place, because he loves to be doing and constantly on the move. This time he spent some time nearby in a lawn chair, and some of the time he walked around the area, but the entire time he was supporting me with anything I might need. For this particular site, he "knew a guy" that he could ask, so we were able to park very near facilities and the paint site even though our van was on private property. That was a huge benefit to me!

With a 2" spatcher in hand, I started this work in a different way than I have tried before when plein air painting. The spatcher is a soft silicon blade that moves paint differently than brushes or knives, and I used it to lay in large areas of color and value as a first step of the painting. That step just made the next part of the work so much fun! I loved refining shapes and colors and seeing how they would react with the large areas of color already on the panel. Maybe this painting will help me to sharpen my own style when painting more representationally outdoors. I have been hoping to find my own direction for these paintings!

Psalm 90:17 Let the favor of the Lord our God be on us;
establish for us the work of our hands—
establish the work of our hands!
