Today I "met" a new musician (through a podcast) by the name of John Van Deusen. Makers & Mystics is a podcast I used to listen to religiously, but have recently let go of, so it was a delight to find something I loved so much as I listened. I was so drawn to the musician during his interview that I looked up some of his music, and I shared it with my musician son.
As the podcast conversation progressed, I was struck by how much the artist loves Jesus, and yet his music does not fit into a typical "Christian music" mold. At all. I really loved that.
He talked about liking his own work, and about making music that is a true expression as an offering to "the audience of One", meaning God Himself. I think that I connected with those ideas, since I want to offer my own true gift of art as an offering.
Another idea that appealed strongly to me is the idea of offering something I like whether or not it is generally liked or accepted, and whether people recognize it as worshipful or not. Oh, I could feel a definite tug in my own heart as I processed that part of his interview!
I had been struggling quite a bit today with several aspects of my art, and my artist's life, and, listening, I felt freed up to just paint - even such a small piece. The semi-transparent white marks on the painting came from a photo on my phone of rocks in the driveway that caught my eye as a beautiful pattern. I knew that representing those rocks was the way I wanted to express worship today. Somehow, my appreciation of the rocks seemed fitting for my offering of worship to my King.
