Talking in My Sleep

Talking in My Sleep
For the last few weeks, I have known the title for this painting, even while it was unfinished. It started, as many do, with words from the Bible on an early layer, and that was a good start toward the title, Talking in My Sleep. I like the title, and I think it helps encourage curiosity about the painting.

20" x 30"
Painted with the finest quality heavy-body acrylic paint and silver colored metal leaf on acid-free, heavy weight Fabriano watercolor paper
White frame included

The words from the Bible come from one of my favorite passages that I have used often,
Psalm 62:5-8 My soul, wait in silence for God only,
For my hope is from Him.
He only is my rock and my salvation,
My stronghold; I shall not be shaken.
On God my salvation and my glory rest;
The rock of my strength, my refuge is in God.
Trust in Him at all times, O people;
Pour out your heart before Him;
God is a refuge for us. Selah.
I have mentioned before that I have memorized this passage several times - which really just means that I sometimes have trouble remembering what I have memorized, and I have to learn it over and over. Rats!

So, why Talking in My Sleep, you may ask. Well, I have been having a tough time sleeping lately. It may be the grief of the last months, or some stress that I have been carrying related to those situations, or maybe just the weight of world events lately, but it has been tough to sleep. Surely I am not alone in this! And so, when I find myself tossing and turning and stewing over something during the night, I have been making a conscious effort to replace those things with memorized Scripture and prayer - which is talking to my Heavenly Father - when I should be, or want to be sleeping!

The painting has beautiful texture, and so much color coming through from the earliest layers to the finished work. It has a somewhat modified composition, combining some structures in an effort to communicate the unsteadiness of tossing and turning and nighttime prayer, as well as the peace that comes when the Heavenly Father grants sleep. The bright areas on the work come from a silver colored metal leaf - good grief that stuff is tough to work with! I hope to get some better photos when the sun comes out.
