Come Before Winter

Come Before Winter
During my quiet time, the time I spend reading the Bible and praying, I can look out the window across our pasture and woods. The big windows face east, so this time of year, I can watch the sunrise. Often, the view of the sunrise accentuates my sense of being in communication with my Heavenly Father.

We have had a few bright, sunny mornings here in northern Indiana, and I have sat in front of the windows with my pantlegs and sleeves rolled up to try to soak up some of that "vitamin S". (Yes, I made that up. I am sure it has a proper name.) Those bright skies, with only a hint of cloudiness, inspired this painting.

I wanted to paint the smooth transition of cold color in the sky, and the dark silhouettes of the trees in the foreground, but NOT in a photorealistic style. I love to just suggest the beauty I am enjoying. The whole painting was done with a spatcher, or color shaper, which is a silicon blade on a handle. It looks kind of like a paintbrush, and works a little bit like a palette knife.

The emotion I wanted to communicate here is a quietness, yet a sense of waiting. Rest, but also yearning.

Some of the verses from the Bible that have been meaningful as I have thought about how to express my painting in words (which is never as successful as the paint), are these:

Romans 1:20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.

Psalm 96:11-12
“Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad; let the sea resound, and all that is in it. Let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them; let all the trees of the forest sing for joy.”

Matthew 5:5 “Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth.

Psalm 104:Let the glory of the Lord endure forever;
Let the Lord be glad in His works;

2 Timothy 4:9, 21
9 Make every effort to come to me soon;
21 Make every effort to come before winter.
